How much water does my grass need, and when should I water it?

The rule of thumb is 1-2 inches per week, whether from rain or hoses. If temperatures are high, your lawn needs 3-4 inches per week.
The optimal watering time is early in the morning, between 4am and 6am. Watering early reduces evaporation and lessens its susceptibility for fungal or disease growth.
The key to watering your lawn is to water it long and deep, infrequently. This method encourages your lawn’s roots to reach down into the soil to seek out its water. Roots that stay superficial are more susceptible to drought and damage from the sun and heat.
